You Are (Or You Become) That Which You Think About Most Of The Time

Your thoughts have a profound effect on your emotions, your state of being, the way you relate to people and the world, and your thoughts truly do trigger a visible and powerful self-fulfilling prophesy.

We all know people that seem to have a dark cloud hanging around them. The moment they walk into the room, the positive energy vanishes and everyone in that person's presence feels a sense of weight and darkness.

Conversely, we also know people who seem to brighten everyone's day just by simply being in their presence. The moment these people walk into the room, everything seems joyful and positive.


We also know people that we would classify or label as cocky, arrogant, selfish, and rude.

And we all also know people that seem to emanate a sense of love, comfort, trust, integrity and humility.

Why is it that we can so easily recognize these "types" and how do they manifest themselves in people?


One answer to that question is the MANTRA.

A Mantra is a short phrase that you repeat in your mind over and over and by repeating it, your entire body shifts towards your interpretation of that little, yet powerful, phrase.

If all day long you think thoughts like, "I am the luckiest person alive" or "I just know good things are coming soon" or "People love and respect me because I'm talented, smart and attractive" then your body will inevitably respond and you will exude a sense of positivity. You'll have a bounce in your step, a smile on your face and a positive glow about you.

On the flip side, if all day long you think thoughts like, "I'm never going to get cast" or "I'm never going to all in love" or "I'm not as talented as the other actors at the audition" or "I'm too old, too fat, too short, too (fill in the blank) to ever have a successful acting career" then of course, you're going to exude a negative energy and guess what?????

You're right. It is a self-fulfilling prophesy. You Are (Or You Become) That Which You Think About Most Of The Time. This is an irrefutable fact and do you know what???

We as actors can use this irrefutable fact to our benefit in our work to fulfill the theatrical obligations of the script and here's how...

EMOTIONAL OBLIGATIONS EXAMPLE

Let's assume your Director and the script has obligated you to be in an emotional state of rage. Well, while you are preparing off-stage or off-camera and also while you are performing if you think a Mantra before during and after your lines that trigger rage in you, then your body will respond and you will be transformed.

Here's exactly what to do:

  1. From the character's perspective or from your personal perspective (whichever your body tells you is more truthful for you), ask yourself this question "What is the most important thing that you need the other person to understand about you right now?

  2. Answer that question with a short Mantra that points your body towards rage. Something like, "You piss me off because you're unprepared and unprofessional" or "You lied to me and I will never trust you again" or "I know you think I'm in over my head, but you're wrong." - You get the idea.

  3. While off-stage or off-camera, you can actually say the Mantra out loud (quietly to yourself) and while you're performing, you simply think the Mantra before, during and in between the lines.

The more you think the Mantra, they more your body, emotions, and overall state of being will respond to help manifest the desired outcome to fulfill the Emotional Obligation.
